Latest HSJi Review discusses restructuring neighbourhoods

Read Jack Serle's latest HSJi Review, which discusses how diagnostic performance in England is struggling with demand outstripping supply, even with the NHS’s laudable increases in capacity over the past five years. Read the full article here.

Latest Investigations

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group is moving towards a formal merger, which may also include University Hospitals of Leicester. The two UHN hospitals, Kettering General Hospital Foundation Trust and Northampton General Hospital Trust, already operate shared clinical services. A new clinical strategy will aim to consolidate services at dedicated sites and shift more care to the community. The next decade will see closer collaboration between UHL and UHN. Plans to rebuild Kettering Hospital have been pushed back to the next decade. It has made a significant commitment to digital integration and the use of AI. The group must deliver a highly ambitious cost-improvement programme. The trust will struggle to identify all required cost savings. There are tight restrictions on the use of temporary staff, and significant cuts to the non-clinical workforce are planned. There are patient flow problems at both trusts. The trust is working closely with national teams to improve emergency department performance.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals Foundation Trust

Mid Cheshire Hospitals FT is under scrutiny from NHS England, with emergency care waiting times among the worst in the country. A troubled rollout of the Meditech electronic patient record this summer has disrupted elective activity. At the same time, long-standing gaps in trauma and orthopaedics have left the trust reliant on the independent sector. It is also exploring the development of a new robotic surgery service, initially focused on colorectal and gynaecological work. Financially, it is contending with a considerable deficit, falling behind on highly ambitious pay savings plans, and facing threats to cash flow following the withdrawal of central funding.  The trust is progressing plans to rebuild Leighton Hospital, a significant capital project expected to cost up to £1.5bn, with the main works contractor to be selected from a national framework.
