Manchester University Foundation Trust

An ex-NHS England director has joined MFT as part of an overhauled executive leadership team, as the trust drafts its first trust-wide strategy in three years with a renewed focus on neighbourhood care and its urgent care programme. Now in year two of its financial recovery plan, MFT is working to reduce its deficit from £143m to £86m, underpinned by an ambitious £165m efficiency programme that relies heavily on one-off measures. Alongside this, leaders are refreshing the outline business case for a major £1.5bn rebuild of North Manchester General Hospital, while expanding urgent care capacity through a £31m redevelopment of Manchester Royal Infirmary’s emergency department. The trust is also seeking to reduce demand through a Single Point of Access model and Hospital at Home services, aiming to cut the elective waiting list to 175,000 by March 2026, supported by transformation programmes such as digital self-scheduling and predictive analytics to reduce appointment cancellations and DNA rates.
