Latest HSJi Review discusses new year, same challenges

Read Jack Serle's latest HSJi Review, which discusses how we have started a brand new year, but just because we are now in 2026 does not mean the challenges facing the NHS are any different to what has beset the service since we passed the worst of the covid-19 pandemic. Read the full article here.

Latest Investigations

Sussex ICB and Surrey Heartlands ICS

The integrated care board is moving towards becoming a strategic commissioner and dropping a range of other functions. It is considering a £120m contract for GP support services, faces changes to local government that will affect joint working alongside a reduced share of funding, has developed neighbourhood health offerings with Sussex seen as more advanced, has service reconfiguration on the cards, and Surrey is keen to make greater use of independent sector provision.

Royal Devon University Healthcare Foundation Trust

The trust is now forecasting a large year-end deficit, failing to meet targets for cutting substantive and temporary staffing pay costs, struggling on elective care while using both in-house and outsourced capacity to increase treatment and diagnostic activity, and has had its £100m estate rebuild plans given the go-ahead. It has an ambient voice technology trial underway.

The use of Ambient Voice Technology in the NHS: 2026 update

NHS England is urging trusts to adopt ambient voice technology at pace, with a £300m tech fund and a primary care procurement framework expected to accelerate uptake, as research shows strong productivity gains – particularly in emergency departments – with early community and mental health pilots also encouraging, although NHSE wants to rein in a “Wild West” supplier market, suppliers are offering four main payment models, and a range of technical, governance, and cultural issues remain unresolved.
