Latest HSJi Review discusses breaking the bank
Read Jack Serle's latest HSJi Review, which discusses how temporary staffing costs are a long-standing target for trusts when they want to make savings. With deficits looming, this year is no exception. NHS England has issued edicts that all providers must reduce temporary staffing spend. Read the full article here.
Latest Investigations
Midlands Partnership University Foundation Trust ended last year in good financial health but faces a challenging efficiency programme in 2025-26. It will continue efforts to reduce agency staffing in favour of bank arrangements and is driving improvements to patient flow to reduce the number of individuals sent out of area. The Trust has also begun a major inpatient transformation programme, which will see services redesigned and resources shifted to provide more care in the community. In addition, it is developing an action plan to offer proactive support for people with severe mental illness living in the community, following the Calocane murders.
Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust has a strong record on waiting times and is now led by Rob Harrison, who has been appointed acting chief executive. An improvement programme is underway following a Care Quality Commission downgrading, alongside the launch of new board development work. The Trust must also deliver a demanding cost improvement programme and make significant reductions in its pay bill. It is seeking to expand its private patient services and is working to maximise the effectiveness of its electronic patient record system.
Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust is entering its third year in the recovery support programme and must deliver £9 million of in-year savings, requiring significant workforce reductions. It remains under oversight for emergency, elective, and diagnostic performance. While a new urgent care centre is planned and an elective hub opened in September, the organisation has not had a new hospital for a decade, although a land purchase has now been agreed. In addition, a shared EPR plan is being developed at the system level.
