Latest HSJi Review talks about the decline and fall in emergency care

Read Jack Serle's latest HSJi Review, which reports on how the emergency care performance in England had been on the decline for several years before covid hit.

It is now approaching the point where observers of the NHS are almost becoming blind to the thundering inadequacy in this area of care, creating the danger of normalising what is a very grim situation. Read full article here.

Latest investigations

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland ICS

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland’s integrated care partnership board includes members from local government, social care, children’s services and the chief executives of University Hospitals of Leicester Trust, Leicestershire Partnership Trust and the local Healthwatch. The HWP has developed its own strategy covering the period 2023-28, which is distinct from the integrated care system’s five-year strategy. The twin initial focus of the HWP strategy is to make it easier for people to access care and to take coordinated action in response to the cost-of-living crisis.

The new NHS innovation landscape

The covid pandemic proved that the NHS could move quickly to introduce innovative solutions to the problems it faced. The pace at which the health service rolled out remote consultations with and monitoring of patients, across all sectors, is a testament to this. As the service recovers from the pandemic, the NHS at a local and national level is increasingly trying to seek to pick winners from among the array of innovative new products that despite being approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and aligning with the clinical priorities of the NHS long-term plan, have not seen wide adoption.

North West Anglia Foundation Trust

The trust’s leadership changed significantly in 2023-24. Mid and South Essex Foundation Trust’s acting chief executive Hannah Coffey was appointed CEO in July 2023. She replaced Caroline Walker, who announced her semi-retirement after five years in the role. The trust’s cancer position is the bigger concern, and NWAFT remains in tier one of NHSE’s oversight regime for that speciality. Many of the trust’s problems in recovering performance, particularly for cancer, stem from a shortage of capacity (theatres, beds and staff), especially in diagnostics. The trust’s short and medium-term strategies, therefore, involve diverting footfall away from its overloaded acute sites.
