Latest HSJi Review discusses whether ICB uncertainty will see the acutes rise?

Read Jack Serle's latest HSJi Review, which highlights how the shock announcement of the NHS's abolition is finally starting to settle, while people are starting to appreciate the full ramifications of another announcement that may have been overshadowed: cutting integrated care board costs by 50 per cent.

This will mean yet more staff cuts to organisations just getting over slashing their admin costs by 30 per cent last year. Read the full article here.

Latest investigations

East Sussex Healthcare Trust

East Sussex treated 54.6 per cent of elective patients within the national standard time of 18 weeks in January. This was below the national average, and some way from the 60 per cent minimum all trusts must meet by March 2026. The trust has shored up its elective care performance by outsourcing some ENT, vascular, gynaecology, and community paediatric work. This will continue during this financial year, albeit at a lower level due to cost pressures. The trust is an increasingly influential player in the county’s integrated care system.

Mid and South Essex ICS

The ICB is procuring an electronic patient record, which will be used by both MSEFT and EPUT. The “Nova” programme will replace the 10 different systems used across the two trusts. The ICB has signed a £65m contract with Oracle Health. The 10-year contract includes an option to extend it for a further five years. The rollout of the EPR is due to start between July and October 2026 and last until April 2027.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust

June 2025 was supposed to see Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust complete the transition from largely paper records to an electronic system from Cerner. The installation is now expected to finish in Autumn 2025. Operating the system will cost the trust £3m a year thereafter.
